Day 9 of Mindfulness: Go To Bed!

Did you know, that in America, over 40 million people are considered sleep-deprived?  That’s insane!  I have to admit, however, that I have a tendency to be one of those who doesn’t get enough sleep.  I will stay up to all hours reading or writing … or sometimes watching really bad movies.

A little over a year ago I decided to take more control of my life, and, in turn, get a little more sleep.  In order to feel more rested, I set myself into a schedule, and I have noticed a great change in how I feel.

Every night I settle in with a cup of herbal tea (right now Celestial Seasonings’ Sleepy Time Plus is my go-to) around 8, and then by 9 or 9:30 I’m off to do my evening meditations for the evening.  These precious 15-20 minutes make such a difference.  If you aren’t in a regular self-practice of meditation, I recommend Insight Timer as a phone app that is fantastic (and free!).  Spending time in meditation right before bed calms the brain and helps ready you for sleep.

Here are some things you can do to give yourself some mindful moments while getting ready for sleep:

  • Use lavender linen spray on your sheets 30 minutes before bed (quick easy way to make it:  put 2-ounces of distilled water and 10 drops of lavender essential oil into a fine mist sprayer)
  • Herbals teas
  • Turn off the technology and find a good book!
  • Don’t forget to meditate just before going to sleep.

  1. I really need to get in the habit of turning off my tech when it gets time for sleep, but I’m one of those people who struggle to sleep without the TV on. Being in the total dark and quiet kind of freaks me out.

    I wonder if they make white noise machines that also light up? Hmm….
